Ph.D. in Law & Human Rights

Morning Programme

The aim of these research programs is to develop individuals, who wish pursue a research-oriented professional career in academics. The Ph.D. program is a rigorous program, which consist of courses and a thesis. The main objectives of the program are:

  • To prepare individuals with in-depth knowledge and an academic competence of international level, where the positions in legal research are required.
  • To improve the qualification, skills, and expertise of legal fraternity and professionals.
  • To promote research activity in domain of legal spectrum particularly in the context of Pakistan.

    Eligibility Criteria

    Eligibility criteria for a relevant field/discipline (in accordance with the department's policy) will be provided by the relevant Board of Studies/DDPC of University College of Law, and the same is also attached with the advertisement.

    Category A
    • L.L.M. or equivalent degree with minimum CGPA of 3.00 (out of 4.00) in the semester system or first division (60%) in the annual system as per HEC and PU rules.
    • No third division in the whole career.
    • Candidates without thesis in LL.M/equivalent are eligible to apply but they shall complete deficiency of 06 credit hours research thesis.
    • Qualifying marks in the admission test conducted by the University are 60%.
    • Qualifying marks in the interview are 50%.
    Category B
    • L.L.M equivalent degree with minimum CGPA less than 3.00 (out of 4.0) in the semester system or first division (60%) in the annual system as per HEC and PU rules.
    • No third division in the whole career.
    • Qualifying marks in the admission test conducted by the University are 60%.
    • Qualifying marks in the interview are 50%.
    • Additional courses of 9-12 CH of level 7 in zero semester and score minimum 3.00 out of 4.00 GPA. (If the applicant does not fulfill both conditions the admission will stand canceled).
    • Candidates without a thesis in LL.M/equivalent are eligible to apply but they shall complete a deficiency of 06 credit hours research thesis.
    Instructions for Admission Test Pattern (Ph.D.)

    The test for Ph.D. will be in two parts: Part A and Part B.

    • Part A: GRE/HAT general type (Annexure I-guidelines for Content Weightages of English/Verbal Reasoning, Analytical Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning) and it is mandatory to score 60% marks in Part A and will be MCQ-based.
    • Part B: Relevant subject-based test (It is up to departments/Institution/ Centre/ School/College to prepare this portion either subjective or objective MCQs based).
    • It is also mandatory to score 60% cumulatively in the entry test.

    • Marks 40 are reserved for academic qualification (the merit formula table is available at www.pu.edu.pk/dpcc) to be added to the merit.
    • The admission regulations of L.L.M and Ph.D. can also be obtained from the University Law College.
    • The processing and examination fee, i.e., Rs. 2050/- must be deposited in the bank through the online Bank challan form generated during application submission. After the submission of the fee to the bank (HBL, UBL or Mobile banking through 1Bill) details must be entered in the application. Final application must be generated for completion of the online submission.
    • Application received (online) after due date and time will not be entertained in any case.
    • Equivalence from PU is required (Qualification/degree from Institutions other than the University of the Punjab, will be equalized by the Equivalence Committee of the University of the Punjab). Candidates must apply for equivalence well in time to the Equivalence Cell, PU and must provide the same before the interview.
    • Equivalence of Degrees Awarded by Chartered Foreign Universities will also be required from HEC Pakistan. PU equivalence is also required.
    • A candidate in the job should provide an NOC from his or her employer on the date of the interview; those who fail to submit will not be included in the merit .
    • A foreign candidate should apply through his or her home country's embassy or consulate and Pakistan's mission abroad (in the case of Overseas Pakistanis). NOC and equivalence of degrees from HEC are required.

    LL.M. (Morning - 2 Years) Semester System

    For L.L.M: L.L.B degree or equivalent in the relevant subject from a HEC-recognized University (At least 16 years of education after HSSC/F.A./F.Sc/Grade 12 or Equivalent; 120 credit hours) as per HEC and PU rules. No third division in the whole career.

    Qualifying marks in the admission test conducted by the University are 50%. (Test pattern for L.L.M: Subject test and in addition to the subject test, the test must include questions on English/Verbal Reasoning, Analytical Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning).

    Qualifying marks in the interview are 50%.

    LL.M.-MS-M.Phil-Ph.D-Rules

    LL.B. 4 (Morning - 4 Years) Semester System

    The LL.B. (4 years program) will provide in-depth knowledge of both International law and the law of Pakistan by blending theoretical understanding and practical training to cope with the emerging challenges in a creative way. The program will also help aspiring legal professionals to develop analytical thinking for strategic arguments at various judicial forums. The proposed program consists of (148 credit hours) with a time period of 04 years. Moreover, it will enable a student to apply for a license of practice by the relevant Bar Councils.

    Admission Criteria
    Eligibility: Have passed FA/F.Sc./ 'A' Level or equivalent examination with a minimum of 55% marks.
    • Have passed the Law Admission Test (LAT) conducted by HEC with 50% passing marks and with a validity date for admission.
    • Must have appeared in the PU Admission Test conducted by Punjab University.
    • Must NOT be more than 24 years of age.
    • The candidates must provide equivalence/verification of their academic documents from the Inter Board Committee of Chairmen (IBCC) at the time of admission.
    Note: Minimum 50% are the qualifying marks in category mentioned as Sr. No.1 & 3, i.e. a candidate must obtain at least 20 marks in academic qualification, and at least 5 marks in interview separately. However, minimum 70% marks (28 marks) are required in entry test at Sr.No.2 to qualify for admission in Ph.D Program as per HEC policy.

    Diploma in Taxation Law (Evening)

    The purpose of DTL is to provide a basic knowledge of Tax Laws in Pakistan.

    Diploma in Environmental Law (Evening)

    Environmental protection is one the great challenges of the modern world. The significance of Environmental Law in fostering equitable sustainable development is now well recognized all over the world. In the National and Regional context, the challenge is how the law can be instrumental in providing a balance between the concerns of ecology, urbanization, over-growth of population, and the growing industrial and commercial demands of modern times. In this context, the University Law College, Lahore, intends to offer a Diploma in Environmental Law.     The regulation of international trade, the function of the World Trade Organization (W.T.O), in an age of globalization has become exceedingly important for countries like Pakistan. W.T.O regime, becoming progressively pervasive, offers on the one hand, enormous opportunities and, on the other, entails unprecedented hazards. Preparations to make the best use of opportunities and minimize threats have indeed become imperative for the economic growth and alleviation of poverty in developing countries. To make adequate and timely response to challenges emanating from W.T.O, there is an urgent need, among other things, to build capacity of various stakeholders including legislators, government functionaries, business entrepreneurs and executives, members of professions like; law, finance and accounting.
